Coloma sits low, down along the South Fork of the American River, with ridges on both sides. Come December the valley loses its daylight early, and the stretch of Highway 49 past Marshall Gold Discovery State Park gets dark in a hurry. A well-lit house down on the valley floor, or one perched up on the hillside above it, stands out for miles. Glow Up Christmas Lights handles Coloma Christmas light installation across the valley: houses, ranches, and the businesses on 49, plus Lotus and Gold Hill up the road. Call (530) 457-4771 and we’ll price your place on the phone at no charge.

    Valley floor versus hillside homes

The valley floor sits around 750 feet, while homes up Mount Murphy Road sit well above the river with views down over Coloma and Lotus. Those two spots need different plans. Down low, people see your house from the road at eye level, so the roofline, porch, and front trees matter most. Up on the hill, people see your house from below and from across the valley. For those homes we light whatever side faces the valley, even if that’s the back of the house, and we favor peaks and long runs that make a clear shape at a distance.

The steep, winding roads matter too. On narrow gravel drives we bring smaller ladders and carry gear in on foot when a truck can’t turn around at the top.

    Older homes along Coloma Road

Coloma has a handful of genuinely old houses, including period homes along Coloma Road, and many of the ranch properties have wood siding and trim that’s been painted more times than anyone can count. We treat them carefully. Lights go on with plastic clips that grip the gutter or shingle edge. We don’t nail, staple, or screw into old trim, and nothing gets forced into place. On porches with turned posts, a pillar wrap in a tight spiral follows the shape instead of fighting it, and lit garland drapes across the railing without hardware.

Gold Hill, Lotus, and the farm roads

Gold Hill and the stretch along Cold Springs Road are farm and orchard country, with homes set on acreage and outbuildings scattered across the property. That changes where the power comes from. The nearest outlet to the road is often on a barn or a pump house, so we plan the cord runs along fences and building edges, never across a driveway where a tractor or truck will roll over them. Every display goes on a timer, which matters more out here than in town, because walking a long dark drive to flip a switch every night gets old by the second week.

Lotus has plenty of homes on bigger parcels too, and a lot of them have big oaks standing close to the house. A trunk wrap on a mature oak by the gate often does more for the view from Lotus Road than a second row on the roof. For the smaller ornamental trees near the entry, we can do branch wraps that follow each limb. Our tree wrapping page explains which trees take lights well.

Don’t overlook the barn or equipment shed if it sits closer to the road than the house does. A lit roofline on an old barn out by the fence gives people something to see right away, and it often has its own power already. We clip to the fascia board or the edge of the metal roofing, run the lights along the eave and up both rakes, and leave the doors clear so you can still get the tractor out.

Up Marshall Road toward Garden Valley, the valley oaks give way to pines and the homes climb onto wooded ridges, so the strands go on the eaves that face the road and the trunk wraps go on whatever pine stands closest to the drive. North on 49 toward Pilot Hill it opens back up into ranch land, where a lit fence along the highway frontage and a bright gate do more than anything at the house.

Coloma Christmas light installation for businesses on 49

Highway 49 through the valley has lodging, shops, and farm stands that stay busy with visitors. We light storefronts, signs, entry walks, and lodging frontage, with stake lighting along paths and wreaths on doors and gateposts. For a business, the timer schedule is usually built around when people are driving by, not when the owner goes home.

Questions we hear from Coloma and Lotus homeowners

Do you really come out this far?

Yes. Our trucks leave Cameron Park every morning, and Coloma is an easy run down Lotus Road. We spend plenty of time in Placerville and out toward Garden Valley and Pilot Hill, so the valley is on our route every November.

    Is the ladder work included?

All of it. The lights, the clips, the stakes, the wreaths and the garland come off our trailer, and the strands are ours to test before they ever reach your roof.

What about stakes near my sprinklers?

We look for heads and drip lines before we set anything. A walkway line might shift a few inches so it clears the irrigation, and rocky spots get handled with care so a stake doesn’t bend or crack a line.

    What if something goes out?

Call (530) 457-4771. A dead run in December gets a repair trip down the hill.

When do the lights come down?

January. The crew comes back, strips the roof and the trees, and hauls every strand away.
